Baze University is moving into aviation training with a facility in Abuja as the institution prepares to commence flight training with two aircraft at its Bwari campus.
The aviation school is being developed on about 88 hectares of land is nearing completion and includes a runway, aircraft hangar, terminal building, flight-operations and planning facilities, classrooms, aviation laboratories, simulation facilities and other infrastructure for practical aviation training.
The project is expected to combine university-based academic instruction with flight training, simulation and practical aviation operations creating capacity for the training of pilots and other aviation professionals in Nigeria.
Baze University said the facility is being developed with relevant aviation regulatory and professional training requirements in view, while its aviation school platform lists pilot licences, professional certificates and degree programmes among the planned training pathways.
The development follows discussions between the university and the Federal Government earlier this year over the establishment of the aviation school.
In February Festus Keyamo the Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister received a delegation from Baze University led by its Founder and Chancellor Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, over the proposed aviation school in Bwari.
The Federal Government subsequently pledged support for the project and said relevant bureaucratic and regulatory processes would be facilitated to support its establishment.
The planned aviation school will cover areas including aviation studies, aeronautical engineering, aircraft management, air traffic control and meteorology, according to the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
The university’s entry into aviation will require specialised manpower across flight operations, engineering, air traffic management, safety and other technical areas.
With its own runway and supporting infrastructure, the Baze facility is designed to provide students with practical exposure alongside classroom-based aviation education.
The university said the project could also support aviation research, technology development and professional training, with the potential to attract students from other African countries.
Baze University was established in Abuja in 2011 and has expanded its academic programmes and infrastructure since its establishment.
