Beyond the Runway: Ejiro Amos Tafiri targets structural barriers to African fashion’s global competitiveness

British Council-backed initiative seeks to strengthen skills development, financing, innovation and commercialisation as African designers pursue global luxury markets

Beyond the Runway: Ejiro Amos Tafiri targets structural barriers to African fashion’s global competitiveness

Limited access to investment, skills and scalable production systems continues to challenge the commercial growth of African fashion brands, prompting Ejiro Amos Tafiri, a vanguard pan-African luxury fashion house, to convene industry stakeholders in Lagos to examine how creative enterprises can become more competitive in international markets.

The third edition of its Fashioning a Legacy: Leaving a Mark in Time conference, organised in partnership with the British Council Nigeria, will bring together designers, educators, policymakers, investors and creative industry leaders on October 24, 2026, at the British Council’s facility in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The initiative comes as African fashion brands seek to expand their international presence amid changing consumer markets, rapid digitalisation and mounting pressure to build commercially viable businesses around the continent’s cultural heritage.

Beyond design and runway visibility, the conference will focus on the business infrastructure required to sustain growth, including workforce development, mentorship, textile preservation, innovation and the commercialisation of African fashion in international markets.

Ejiro Amos Tafiri, founder and creative director of the fashion house, said the initiative was designed to create a platform where established industry players and emerging entrepreneurs could exchange knowledge and develop practical approaches to the sector’s long-term growth.

“True sustainable growth in African fashion requires more than raw creative talent; it demands robust business infrastructure, deliberate mentorship pipelines, and strategic policy frameworks,” Tafiri said.

She added that the conference was intended to encourage collaboration between established industry practitioners and emerging designers, with the aim of building a more self-sustaining fashion ecosystem.

One of the conference’s central propositions is that international exposure alone cannot guarantee the commercial success of African fashion brands.

Although designers from the continent have increasingly participated in international fashion showcases, translating that visibility into consistent revenue requires investment in production capacity, skilled labour, product development, distribution and brand positioning.

These requirements are particularly important for luxury fashion businesses, which depend on quality control, distinctive design, reliable supply chains and the ability to maintain consistent standards as production expands.

Ejiro Amos Tafiri, established in 2010, has built its identity around indigenous fabrics, layered textures, embellishments and contemporary interpretations of African-inspired design. The company operates across fashion design, retail and education, while advocating collaborative retail structures and knowledge-sharing within the African fashion industry.

The brand’s participation in international showcases, including Paris Fashion Week and Shanghai Fashion Week under the Africa Reimagined platform, provides a context for its effort to connect global industry perspectives with local capacity development.

Scaling an emerging fashion label requires entrepreneurs to move beyond design and develop the operational capabilities needed to run sustainable businesses. This includes strengthening financial and business management, recruiting skilled workers, standardising production and using digital platforms to reach customers across geographical boundaries. The conference is set to address these challenges through its three pillars of creativity, education and innovation.

Workforce development is another priority for the initiative, reflecting the importance of technical and commercial skills to the growth of fashion enterprises.

The organisers also intend to address sustainable textile preservation, an issue closely linked to the use of indigenous materials and the protection of traditional techniques.

The combination of these priorities positions the conference as a platform for discussing how creative knowledge can be translated into productive capacity and commercial opportunity.

In a bid to reduce barriers to professional knowledge, attendance at the conference will be free, although prospective participants must register digitally in advance.

The organisers said the arrangement aligns with the Ejiro Amos Tafiri Foundation’s commitment to reducing inequality within the industry and expanding access to professional development resources.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, at the British Council, 20 Thompson Avenue, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Interested participants can register through the organisers’ online registration portal at https://qrfy.io/Wy3-8RqkdE.
