Delta air Lines to end free snacks & drinks on 450 short-haul flights from may 19
Delta air lines cuts main cabin service on flights under 350 miles.
Delta Air Lines to end free snacks, drinks, and meal service on around 450 daily short-haul flights starting May 19, 2026. The airline confirmed that passengers traveling in Delta Main Cabin and Delta Comfort on flights under 350 miles will no longer receive onboard food or beverage service.
The change affects routes such as Los Angeles to San Francisco and marks a major shift in the carrier’s short-flight onboard experience.
Delta Introduces New Distance-Based Service Policy
Under Delta’s updated service structure:
- Flights under 250 miles will continue to have no onboard service.
- Flights between 251 and 349 miles will lose the current express snack and beverage service.
- Flights between 350 and 499 miles will be upgraded from express service to full snack and beverage service.
- Flights above 500 miles will continue receiving full onboard service.
Passengers flying in First Class will still receive full service regardless of flight distance.
Why Delta Is Removing Snacks on Short Flights
According to Delta, the decision is aimed at creating a more consistent onboard experience while helping flight attendants manage tight service windows on shorter routes.
Cabin crew on short-haul flights often have limited time — sometimes as little as 15 minutes — to complete beverage and snack service before descent begins. The airline believes removing service on very short routes will improve efficiency and reduce rushed cabin operations.
Delta Says Customer Experience Will Improve
Delta stated that while some passengers may dislike the removal of complimentary snacks and drinks, travelers on flights between 350 and 499 miles will benefit from upgraded full-service offerings instead of the current limited express menu.

The airline also noted that crew members will remain available and attentive even on flights without beverage service.
How Delta Compares With Other US Airlines
Delta now has the strictest minimum distance requirement for complimentary snack service among major US airlines.
- American Airlines and Southwest Airlines still offer service on flights over 250 miles.
- United Airlines provides onboard service on flights above 300 miles.
- Ultra-low-cost carriers such as Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air mainly operate buy-on-board food and drink models.
Delta’s New In-Flight Service Rules Starting May 19
| Flight Distance | Current Service | New Service |
|---|---|---|
| 0–250 miles | No service | No service |
| 251–349 miles | Express service | No service |
| 350–499 miles | Express service | Full service |
| 500+ miles | Full service | Full service |
Delta Continues Shift Toward Operational Efficiency
Delta first removed complimentary service on flights under 250 miles in 2015 and introduced express service on shorter flights in 2017. The latest changes are part of the airline’s broader effort to simplify cabin operations and standardize service across its network.
