The growing influence of artificial intelligence in forecasting major global events has extended into the world of football, with a new AI-powered analysis predicting that France will emerge as champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating defending champions Argentina in the tournament final.
The prediction, developed by sports analytics platform Action Network, highlights the increasing role of data science, machine learning and predictive modelling in sports forecasting, an area attracting significant commercial interest from betting operators, sports technology firms, media companies and investors seeking deeper insights into competitive outcomes.
According to the analysis, France, Spain, England and Argentina are projected to reach the semi-finals of the expanded 48-team tournament, with France ultimately overcoming Argentina to claim football’s most coveted prize.
The forecast was generated after an extensive artificial intelligence exercise that processed more than 1,200 individual data points across 25 performance variables covering all 48 qualified nations.
The model evaluated every stage of the tournament, from the group phase through the newly expanded knockout rounds, including the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
Action Network said the AI model incorporated a wide range of performance indicators designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of each nation’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of the tournament.
Among the variables considered were FIFA rankings, recent match results, qualification records, squad valuations, player performance statistics, coaching experience, continental tournament performances and historical World Cup records.
The system also factored in logistical considerations such as travel distances, pre-tournament preparation schedules and the timing of domestic league seasons.
According to the company, the objective was to move beyond traditional football forecasting methods by combining performance metrics, squad quality indicators and tournament-specific variables into a single predictive framework.
An Action Network spokesperson said France’s projected triumph was supported by several key advantages.
“Using advanced AI analysis, the outcome of the 2026 World Cup tournament was predicted based on key data, including recent national team form, World Cup history, squad market value, coach profiles and much more. After predicting the group stage, the round of 32 and the entire knockout stage, France was predicted to be the tournament’s overall winner,” the spokesperson said.
The analysis identified several factors supporting France’s chances, including its position as the world’s top-ranked national team, the highest squad valuation among all participating countries and the continued influence of coach Didier Deschamps.
The French squad was valued at €1.48 billion, making it the most expensive national team in the competition.
The model also highlighted the form of Kylian Mbappé and the managerial stability provided by Didier Deschamps, who has spent more than a decade leading the national side.
The 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is expected to provide an unprecedented volume of data given the tournament’s expanded format.
The competition will feature 48 teams for the first time, increasing the number of matches and creating additional complexity for analysts and forecasting models.
Norway tipped as breakout nation
Beyond predicting the tournament winner, the AI model also identified a group of nations considered most likely to outperform expectations.
Leading the list is Norway, which the model described as the tournament’s most likely surprise package.
The Scandinavian nation is projected to exceed expectations thanks to a combination of individual star quality and strong qualification performances.
The analysis cited the goalscoring exploits of Erling Haaland and the creative influence of Martin Ødegaard as major strengths.
Norway’s appearance would mark its first World Cup participation since 1998, adding further intrigue to its potential tournament impact.
Other nations identified as possible surprise performers include:
- Austria
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Morocco
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
Particularly noteworthy is Morocco’s inclusion following its historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the deepest-ever World Cup performance by an African nation
