Heavy rain, strong winds raise operational considerations for airlines

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country on Friday, August 28, with conditions that airlines and other aviation operators will need to consider in their flight planning.

In its Impact-Based Weather Forecast issued on Thursday, August 27, NiMet forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over parts of Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ogun and Lagos states.

The agency also forecast light to moderate rainfall over parts of Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, the North-Central region and parts of the South-West and South-East. The forecast is valid from 0000 to 2359 hours on Friday, August 28.

NiMet’s daily outlook also puts parts of the North-West, Taraba and Adamawa under the possibility of afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall. Parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa are also forecast to have rainfall and isolated thunderstorms during the day.

Across the southern part of the country, the agency’s outlook includes rainfall over parts of the South-East and South-South, with further rainfall forecast in the afternoon and evening.

The forecast comes with a strong-wind outlook for parts of northern Nigeria. NiMet identified parts of Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi and Borno as areas with a high likelihood of strong winds, while parts of Kano, Katsina and Sokoto were placed under moderate risk.

The aviation operators’ weather information forms part of the planning required before and during flight operations NiMet provides aeronautical weather services to the aviation sector, including forecasts and other weather information used by operators for flight planning and safety.

The agency’s aviation weather services include aerodrome forecasts, weather observations, significant weather information and other products used by airlines and flight crews.
