Study shows Nigerian small businesses fulfil 86% of monthly orders through apps

inDrive targets Nigeria’s SME delivery market as app-based orders rise

inDrive, a global mobility and delivery services platform, is positioning its inDrive.Couriers service to capture growing demand for digital delivery solutions among Nigerian small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), as merchants increasingly rely on app-based platforms to fulfil customer orders.

According to a study by the company, Nigerian small business owners fulfil an average of 86 per cent of their monthly orders through apps, underscoring the growing role of digital delivery services in managing logistics, meeting customer expectations and supporting day-to-day business operations.

The trend is particularly relevant to merchants operating in fashion, cosmetics, food and pharmaceuticals, where timely delivery and reliable order fulfilment can influence customer satisfaction, repeat purchases and business competitiveness.

Through inDrive.Couriers, the company is offering merchants a delivery option that allows them to arrange same-day shipments by motorcycle or car, propose their preferred prices and select verified couriers based on ratings and available transport options.

The service also incorporates real-time parcel tracking, enabling businesses to monitor deliveries from pickup to drop-off and keep customers informed of their orders’ progress.

The proposition comes as smaller businesses seek greater control over logistics costs and delivery schedules without necessarily committing to lengthy contracts with traditional logistics providers.

Timothy Oladimeji, country manager of inDrive Nigeria, said the service was designed to give merchants greater flexibility in managing delivery costs and timing while reducing the administrative burden associated with order fulfilment.

He said the platform’s features could help business owners coordinate orders more efficiently, spend less time following up on deliveries and devote more attention to sales and customer relationships.

“Small and medium-sized businesses need delivery solutions that are convenient, affordable, and flexible enough to meet their day-to-day needs,” Oladimeji said.

“With inDrive.Couriers, we are making it easier for businesses to arrange deliveries on their terms, manage costs and maintain visibility over their orders. Our goal is to give entrepreneurs more control over their delivery operations so they can focus on serving customers and growing their businesses,” he added.

The company’s strategy places pricing flexibility at the centre of its appeal to smaller merchants, allowing users to propose what they are willing to pay for a delivery rather than relying exclusively on fixed-price arrangements.

To strengthen confidence in its delivery offering, inDrive.Couriers provides free parcel coverage in Nigeria, with reimbursement of up to ₦50,000 per order if a parcel is lost or damaged in transit.

The coverage applies automatically at no additional cost, according to the company, giving participating businesses an additional layer of protection when fulfilling customer orders.

The benefit could be particularly relevant to small merchants shipping products directly to customers, although the stated reimbursement ceiling means businesses sending higher-value goods would need to consider whether the coverage adequately protects their exposure.

The combination of courier selection, flexible pricing, tracking and parcel coverage forms part of inDrive’s effort to make its delivery service more relevant to businesses that require on-demand logistics without the operational commitments associated with maintaining their own delivery fleets.

For smaller enterprises, outsourcing deliveries through digital platforms can provide access to transport capacity without the direct costs of purchasing vehicles, employing dedicated riders and managing a delivery operation. The extent of the benefit, however, depends on order volumes, delivery frequency and the cost of using third-party services.

The 86 per cent figure cited in the company’s study points to the growing importance of app-based order fulfilment among Nigerian SMBs.

As merchants increasingly integrate digital channels into their sales operations, delivery services are becoming an important part of the customer experience rather than simply the final stage of a transaction.

For inDrive, the opportunity lies in converting this reliance on digital fulfilment into sustained use of its courier platform, particularly among businesses looking for flexible delivery arrangements and greater visibility over shipments.

With inDrive.Couriers, the company is seeking to establish itself as a flexible logistics option for Nigerian merchants navigating the demands of app-based commerce, same-day delivery and increasingly service-conscious customers.
