Nigeria’s expanding appetite for international design is drawing the attention of one of the world’s biggest furniture and design trade platforms, with Salone del Mobile. Milano making its debut in the country as rising export figures position the Nigerian market as an increasingly important destination for Italian-made furniture.
The Italian design showcase’s arrival in Lagos during Design Week Lagos 2026 comes against the backdrop of a 27 percent increase in Italian furniture exports to Nigeria in 2025, reaching €41.6 million, and an acceleration in demand for Italian bathroom furniture in the first half of 2026. The figures strengthen the commercial case for deeper engagement between Italian manufacturers and Nigeria’s architects, interior designers, property developers and wider creative industries.
The debut gathering at the National Theatre, Lagos, brought together Marco Sabetta, general manager of Salone del Mobile. Milano, and Marva Griffin Wilshire, founder and curator of SaloneSatellite, with Nigerian design professionals, business leaders and institutions. The discussions were aimed at improving understanding of the local market and opening pathways for collaboration with the international design industry.
Global design platforms are increasingly looking beyond Africa as a market for finished products, recognising the continent’s potential as a source of creative talent, materials, ideas and manufacturing partnerships. The development opens up opportunities to connect African design capabilities with international production networks and industrial development.
In 2025, Italian furniture exports to Africa reached €448.4 million, representing year-on-year growth of 13.1 percent. Nigeria ranked as the continent’s fourth-largest African market for Italian furniture, with exports valued at €41.6 million, according to figures provided by Salone del Mobile. Milano. First-half 2026 data showed Nigerian demand for Italian bathroom furniture rising by 108.6 percent.

The figures strengthen the commercial case for Italian manufacturers seeking to expand their presence in Nigeria, particularly across property development, hospitality and retail. For Nigerian design businesses, the engagement offers a potential route to international expertise, product innovation and cross-border industry relationships that could improve their access to global markets.
Reflecting on the Lagos engagement, Marco Sabetta, general manager of the Salone del Mobile. Milano, stated: “The competitiveness of design companies depends on their ability to interpret different ways of living, cultures, and needs.
“Engaging with the Lagos community today provided our companies with invaluable new perspectives on products and solutions, while offering local talent direct access to international manufacturing expertise. We return to Milan enriched with new questions that will guide our future work.”
The visit forms part of Salone’s 2026–2027 World Tour, which seeks to consolidate established markets while exploring territories with strong growth potential. The Nigerian engagement is expected to continue in Milan at the 65th edition of Salone del Mobile, scheduled for April 13–18, 2027, at Rho Fiera Milano.
The Lagos programme also placed African design’s commercial future at the centre of discussions, with participants examining how creative talent and locally available materials can be translated into products, manufacturing capacity and sustainable industries.

Titi Ogufere, founder of Design Week Lagos, said the continent’s next design chapter must move beyond showcasing talent to building the systems that enable designers to manufacture, commercialise and scale their work.
“The next chapter of African design cannot be about visibility alone. Africa has extraordinary materials, knowledge, and creative talent. The opportunity now is to transform those ideas into products, production, and industries — asking what Africa will make next, how we will make it, and how design can drive industrial growth across the continent,” Ogufure said.
A major highlight of the week was the recognition of Griffin Wilshire at the inaugural IDEA Honours ceremony, where she received the Architectural Legacy Honour for her contribution to international design through SaloneSatellite, a platform dedicated to emerging designers.
She was honoured alongside Lesley Lokko, the Ghanaian-Scottish architect and author, who received the Architectural Leadership Honour, and Yinka Shonibare, who received the Cultural Impact Honour. The award plaque presented to Griffin Wilshire was designed by Demas Nwoko, a renowned Nigerian artist and architect.
Griffin Wilshire said the recognition was particularly meaningful in the context of meeting emerging African designers and considering how they could connect with international opportunities.
“I am deeply honoured to have received this award. SaloneSatellite was built to give young creators a real chance to present their work, engage with industry, and find partners who believe in them,” she said.
“Being here in Lagos today allowed us to discover remarkable new African talent and build the conditions that will help young designers forge their paths globally,” she added.

The programme also featured a conversation between Griffin Wilshire and Ogufere, alongside a guided tour for journalists and delegates exploring Design Week Lagos’s central theme, Making a New Africa: From Material to Market.
The theme links creative expression to a more commercially oriented agenda, focusing on the relationships between local resources, design knowledge, product development and the industrial capacity needed to take African products to wider markets.
Founded by Titi Ogufere, Design Week Lagos is positioning Lagos as a destination for design, innovation and enterprise, while bringing international industry figures into direct contact with the region’s creative community.
Salone del Mobile. Milano is widely regarded as a leading international design trade show. Its 65th edition in April 2027 will feature platforms including SaloneSatellite, Euroluce, Salone Contract and Salone Raritas.
The 2026–2027 World Tour is supported by the Italian Trade Agency and Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
