The 5N code giving Nigerian aircraft their legal identity

5N

Every Nigerian-registered aircraft carries a combination of letters and numbers that provides a formal means of identifying the aircraft and the State in whose register it is recorded. The marking which is displayed on the aircraft’s fuselage begins with 5N Nigeria’s nationality mark followed by registration characters assigned to the particular aircraft while the characters may appear to be a simple marking on the aircraft they form part of the regulatory system through which civil aircraft are registered and identified in Nigeria.

The 5N prefix is Nigeria’s nationality mark under the international aircraft registration system. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) assigns nationality marks to States while the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) administers aircraft registration and marking requirements in the country. This means that the prefix establishes the State of Registry while the characters that follow distinguish the particular aircraft on Nigeria’s register.

Under the NCAA’s registration requirements the registration mark after 5N can contain up to three characters, using Arabic numerals, roman capital letters or a combination of both. Examples include 5N-AAA and 5N-A19 the authority also sets rules for the allocation of registration marks and prohibits certain combinations including SOS, XXX, PAN and TTT.

The marking is only one part of an aircraft’s official records; it should not be confused with the aircraft’s model or type such as a Boeing 737 or its manufacturer-assigned serial number. The NCAA’s Certificate of Registration records the nationality and registration marks separately from the manufacturer’s designation and the aircraft serial number reflecting the different purposes each identifier serves.

The registration mark also remains connected to the aircraft’s legal status within the Nigerian register. The NCAA handles processes including registration re-registration and deregistration, meaning the registration details can change when an aircraft moves between national registers or undergoes a change requiring a new registration the physical aircraft remains identifiable through its manufacturer-assigned serial number and other technical records.

The markings themselves are subject to regulatory requirements covering how they are displayed on the aircraft. Nigerian civil aviation rules require an aircraft to bear the prescribed nationality and registration marks before it operates in Nigeria, with requirements governing their visibility, permanence and legibility.

This system also allows the registration marking to serve a practical purpose beyond what passengers see on the aircraft’s body. Different aircraft of the same model can have different registration marks because registration is tied to the individual aircraft and its entry in the State’s register rather than simply to the aircraft type or the airline operating it.

When an aircraft is transferred to another national register, its nationality and registration markings can change to reflect the new State of Registry. The change does not erase the aircraft’s manufacturing history, rather the registration marking reflects where the aircraft is currently registered.
