United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group has issued a rebuttal to what it describes as a “false, defamatory, and malicious” report circulating across social media platforms alleging that Tony O. Elumelu, its group chairman, has divorced his wife.
In a statement released from its Lagos headquarters, the pan-African financial institution dismissed the claims as entirely fabricated and deliberately crafted to mislead the public while inflicting reputational damage on both its chairman and the bank’s corporate image. The bank emphasized that the allegations lack any factual basis and constitute a coordinated attempt to spread misinformation.
United Bank for Africa confirmed that it has escalated the matter to law enforcement authorities, resulting in the arrest of three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and dissemination of the false narrative. The individuals named are Kingsley Akunemeihe, also known online as @Directorkem; Chigozie Success Ihebom; and John Surpruchi Nwanorue, identified as @problemchimky.
According to the bank, investigations remain ongoing and are expected to expand, with authorities pursuing additional suspects connected to what UBA describes as a broader defamatory campaign. The institution underscored its zero-tolerance stance toward misinformation, particularly content capable of undermining stakeholder confidence in its leadership and governance.
The statement signed by Alero Ladipo, group head, brand, marketing & corporate communication, further issued a cease-and-desist directive to all individuals, digital platforms, and entities involved in publishing or amplifying the claims. It mandated the immediate removal of the content, a halt to further dissemination, and the preservation of all relevant digital records (including metadata and communication trails), for potential legal proceedings.
The bank warned that non-compliance would trigger legal action, including claims for defamation, damages, and injunctive relief under applicable laws. It reiterated its commitment to protecting its brand integrity and the personal reputation of its chairman.
“Failure to comply will result in the initiation of legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, damages, and any other remedies available under applicable law,” the group stated.
