Zoho brings AI to Nigeria’s tax and accounting challenge

Zoho brings AI to Nigeria’s tax and accounting challenge

Zoho Corporation has stepped up its push into Nigeria’s business software market, launching a locally configured version of its Zoho Books accounting platform as businesses face growing demands for digital tax compliance, e-invoicing and more efficient financial management.

The technology company said the Nigeria edition of Zoho Books has been designed around local VAT, withholding-tax and e-invoicing requirements, while extending the platform beyond bookkeeping into payments, inventory, budgeting, workflow automation and artificial intelligence.

The launch comes as Nigerian businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, confront a rapidly changing compliance environment while seeking to reduce the administrative costs of running increasingly complex operations.

For Zoho, the opportunity extends beyond selling accounting software. It is a bet that the digitisation of tax and financial processes can accelerate demand for integrated business-management platforms among Nigerian companies.

“Businesses will now have AI-native finance applications purpose-built for the Nigerian regulatory environment that streamline their financial operations, scaling with them as their business grows while offering real-time insights every step of the way,” Prashant Ganti, vice president of global product strategy and alliances, finance and operations business unit at Zoho, said.

Central to the Nigerian edition is the ability to automate several tax-related processes that have traditionally required significant manual intervention.

Zoho Books can automatically apply VAT rates to transactions based on item type and customer classification, handle reverse charges on sales and purchases, and manage withholding tax for transactions involving both residents and non-residents.

The platform can also generate VAT schedules for sales transactions in the format required by the TaxProMax portal, while businesses can generate and submit e-invoices directly to the Nigeria Revenue Service portal or its Merchant Buyer Solution through an approved e-invoicing service provider.

The significance for businesses goes beyond convenience.

As tax administration becomes increasingly digital, compliance is becoming intertwined with the systems companies use to invoice customers, record transactions, reconcile bank accounts and manage inventory.

That is creating a growing market for software capable of connecting those functions rather than leaving businesses to manage them across spreadsheets, standalone accounting packages and manual processes.

Zoho is positioning its Nigerian platform around that convergence.

Beyond tax compliance, Zoho Books provides invoicing, online payment collection, accounting, bank reconciliation, stock tracking, project management, budgeting and workflow automation.

The company is also using Nigeria’s relatively low adoption of artificial intelligence in financial management as another entry point.

A recent Zoho survey of more than 100 Nigerian small and medium-sized businesses found that only 24 percent currently use AI tools for financial management, while 65 percent cited lack of awareness as the main reason they have not adopted the technology.

Among businesses already using AI, 30 percent reported saving between one and three hours per week, according to the survey.

That suggests a potentially significant productivity market if businesses move from experimentation with AI to embedding it directly into routine financial operations.

Zoho is attempting to make that transition part of the accounting platform itself rather than requiring businesses to adopt separate AI tools.

Its AI capabilities include suggestions for categorising bank transactions, data retrieval and business overviews through Ask Zia, prompt-based creation of sales transactions through Cocreate Agent, financial forecasting, anomaly detection and invoicing insights through Zia Invoice Agent.

Zoho is extending the Nigerian localisation across its wider finance and operations portfolio.

The Nigeria edition is available across Zoho Books, Zoho Billing, Zoho Invoice, Zoho Commerce, Zoho Inventory, Zoho Spend, Zoho Expense, Zoho Procurement and Zoho Practice.

The company said the applications operate on a common platform, allowing data to move between them without businesses repeatedly entering the same information into separate systems.

Zoho said its finance and operations platform allows businesses to customise, scale and extend applications without requiring significant investment in IT resources, potentially reducing the cost and time involved in adapting systems as business requirements change.
