Seplat Energy Plc, a leading Nigerian independent energy company, has reaffirmed its commitment to energy sustainability and eradicating energy poverty in Nigeria  following the installation of over 850 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas processing capacity, as it taps into the mass gas reserves of its assets to further power Nigeria.

Samson Ezugworie, the company’s chief operating officer, stated this while speaking at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council 2025 Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (OLEF) in Abuja, emphasising that true business sustainability necessitates a forward-looking approach.

During a panel session titled “Driving Energy Sustainability Through Technology, Policy, and Supply Chain Excellence”, Ezugworie highlighted the critical issue of energy poverty in Nigeria, noting its detrimental impact on the nation and its people’s potential.

In addressing this challenge, Ezugworie pointed to Seplat Energy’s gas infrastructure development. He added that the company’s recently acquired MPNU assets would unlock further growth opportunities in the energy sector.

Ezugworie underscored the importance of human capital development for sustainable progress. He cited Seplat’s recent recruitment of 50 young graduates undergoing extensive training as a key element of their sustainability strategy, ensuring a pipeline of future talent.

Highlighting Seplat’s technological advancements in Nigeria’s gas sector, Ezugworie noted the transformational impact of the company’s interventions.

A key focus is the implementation of its end of routine flaring (EORF) roadmap, involving investments across production facilities to minimize Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy efficiency.

According to the COO, the first module of Seplat’s Sapele Integrated Gas Plant (SIGP) has commenced operations and is expected to reduce the group’s Scope 1 emissions once fully operational in 2025. Other ongoing flare-out projects include the Western Asset Flares Out (installation of vapour recovery unit compressors), Sapele LPG Storage & Offloading Facility, Oben LPG Project, and Ohaji Flares Out Project. Seplat Energy remains on track to end routine flaring across its onshore assets in the second half of 2025.

Beyond its core operations, Ezugworie emphasised Seplat Energy’s commitment to Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives. In the past year, the company’s programmes have impacted a number of beneficiaries including 352 teachers through the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP) in 2024; 6,373 students via the 2024 Pearls Quiz; the equipping of four Science Technology Engineering Arts & Mathematics (STEAM) Labs in secondary schools; 9,780 individuals through the 2024 Eye Can See Programme; and the completion of energy solutions in six schools and three hospitals.
