Heirs Insurance Group, one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing insurance providers, has announced the commencement of the fourth edition of its annual Heirs Insurance Essay Championship, a nationwide competition designed to cultivate insurance awareness among junior secondary school students.

This year’s edition, which opened for submissions on May 27, 2025, will run until July 8 and features a total prize pool of ₦10.5 million—a significant investment in educational advancement and financial literacy at the grassroots level.

At the heart of the competition is a strong emphasis on early engagement with insurance concepts. Participating students are expected to submit original essays, limited to 500 words, on the topic: “The Role of Insurance in Keeping Families Safe and Secure.”

According to the company, entries must be submitted through the official website, with evaluations to be conducted by a panel of distinguished academics. To ensure a credible and transparent selection process, auditing firm Deloitte & Touche will oversee the quality assurance phase.

The overall winner will receive a ₦5 million scholarship, alongside a ₦1 million education grant for their school. The first and second runners-up will earn ₦2 million and ₦1 million scholarships, respectively.

Additionally, the competition integrates insurance-themed quizzes and other learning modules as part of the entry process, reinforcing the educational objectives of the programme.

In a notable enhancement to this year’s initiative, the Group has introduced the Teachers’ Insurance Awareness Prize (TIAP), a new category aimed at recognising educators who actively promote insurance literacy within their schools and communities.

The top-performing teacher under this category will be awarded a ₦1 million cash prize, with a further ₦500,000 grant allocated to their school. To qualify, teachers must implement a documented insurance awareness project and demonstrate measurable impact.

Speaking on the 2025 edition, Ifesinachi Okpagu, chief marketing officer at Heirs Insurance Group, underscored the strategic intent behind the initiative: “We are thrilled to launch an expanded version of the Heirs Insurance Essay Championship. Beyond empowering students and schools, this edition also honours the pivotal role that teachers play in shaping financially-literate communities. At Heirs Insurance, we believe education is a key lever in building a more secure and inclusive future, and we are proud to continue investing in that vision.”

The winners of this year’s competition will be unveiled at a grand finale event scheduled for August 2025.

The Heirs Insurance Essay Championship stands as a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme of the Heirs Insurance Group, aligning with its broader mission to promote financial inclusion and deepen insurance penetration among Nigeria’s youth population.

A subsidiary of Heirs Holdings, the pan-African investment conglomerate with a footprint in 24 countries across four continents, Heirs Insurance Group comprises Heirs General Insurance Limited, Heirs Life Assurance Limited, and Heirs Insurance Brokers.

With its growing nationwide presence and robust digital infrastructure, the Group continues to redefine retail insurance access in Nigeria, championing a future where insurance is simple, accessible, and inclusive for all.
