Tinubu picks Oyedele as finance minister in lean cabinet shake-up

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a minor reshuffle of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), elevating Taiwo Oyedele to the role of minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy in a move widely seen as a strategic recalibration of the administration’s economic management team.

The decision, conveyed through an official memo signed by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, confirms the exit of Wale Edun from his position as finance minister, alongside Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, minister of housing and urban development.

Edun has been directed to hand over to Oyedele, who steps up from his previous role as minister of state in the finance ministry. His elevation signals continuity in fiscal policy direction while positioning a technocrat with direct familiarity of the ministry’s reform agenda at the helm of Nigeria’s economic coordination.

Also announced is the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD) as minister-designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, subject to the necessary confirmation processes. In the interim, Dangiwa has been instructed to transfer responsibilities to the minister of state within the ministry.

The directive mandates that “all handing over and taking over processes should be completed on or before close of business on Thursday 23rd April, 2026,” underscoring the urgency attached to ensuring seamless administrative transition.

Providing context for the reshuffle, Akume stated: “These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Akume further clarified that the President exercised his constitutional authority under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in effecting the changes.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their contributions to national development and wished them success in their future endeavours. He also reassured members of the cabinet that further adjustments could follow, noting that “the process of reinvigoration shall be continuous.”
