inDrive bets on low commissions, driver welfare deepen Nigeria ride-hailing presence

inDrive is positioning low commissions, higher earning opportunities and welfare partnerships as key pillars of its strategy to strengthen its position in Nigeria’s ride-hailing market, as the debate over driver earnings, passenger fares and platform fees puts the economics of app-based transport under renewed scrutiny.

The global mobility and delivery services platform says its reduced service fee allows drivers to retain a greater share of fares amid prevailing economic pressures, while additional initiatives targeting earnings, healthcare, insurance and safety are designed to address the broader costs and risks associated with operating on its platform.

The company says it charges the lowest commission fee in the industry, although it did not disclose the specific rate or provide comparative data to independently establish the claim.

The debate over commissions has commercial implications for both drivers and ride-hailing operators. Drivers must cover fuel, vehicle maintenance and other operating expenses from their share of fares, while platforms need to balance competitive pricing with the cost of running their technology, customer support and safety systems.

inDrive asserts that maintaining a low service fee is part of an effort to support driver participation and improve the attractiveness of its platform. But the effect on driver welfare will depend on net earnings after operating expenses, the volume of completed trips and the time drivers spend waiting for customers.

The company says its strategy extends beyond commission reductions. Through its Comfort module, drivers with eligible vehicles manufactured from 2008 onwards can receive a 30 percent fare increase on qualifying trips.

The feature offers drivers the prospect of higher earnings on eligible journeys while giving passengers access to an additional service category. Its overall contribution to driver income, however, will depend on customer demand, the number of qualifying trips and the costs associated with operating eligible vehicles.

inDrive is also working with Heala and MyCover to improve drivers’ access to healthcare and insurance-related services, broadening its approach from immediate trip earnings to risks that can affect drivers’ financial security.

The commercial value of these partnerships will depend on the benefits available, the terms of access, affordability and the extent to which drivers take up the services. The company has not provided figures on participation or the financial value of the support offered.

Safety is another part of the platform’s effort to build confidence among drivers and passengers. At its third Safety Summit, held recently in Abuja, inDrive brought together drivers, passengers, couriers, merchants, regulators and other stakeholders to discuss safety, accountability and practical measures to strengthen trust across the sector.

The company said it would continue to engage drivers and relevant stakeholders and use feedback to improve its services, while investing in safety and other service improvements.
