PalmPay deepens wealth offerings amid rising demand for digital savings

PalmPay deepens wealth offerings amid rising demand for digital savings

As Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive gathers momentum, digital financial platforms are increasingly driving the focus from access to financial services to helping consumers build sustainable savings habits and achieve long-term financial security.

With rising living costs and competing financial obligations putting pressure on household finances, financial experts and digital service providers are placing greater emphasis on structured savings, financial discipline and wealth accumulation.

PalmPay, a digital financial services platform, is positioning its savings solutions as part of this emerging trend, offering customers access to savings products through the Wealth section of its app.

The platform, widely used by Nigerians for transfers, bill payments and other transactions, provides savings products through PalmPay Microfinance Bank (MFB), enabling customers to set financial goals, automate contributions and earn interest on their deposits.

The growing relevance of digital savings platforms is reflected in Nigeria’s financial inclusion figures.

According to EFInA’s 2026 Access to Financial Services in Nigeria survey, the proportion of Nigerian adults saving formally increased from 38 per cent in 2023 to 53 per cent in 2026, while overall financial inclusion rose to 79 per cent.

A recent customer testimonial shared on X showcases how structured savings could translate into tangible financial and social outcomes.

The PalmPay customer said he began saving on January 22, 2026, with a target of N1 million through scheduled daily contributions. With his payout expected on December 10, he anticipates receiving more than N1 million, which he intends to use to support widows in his neighbourhood, celebrate Christmas with his family and prepare for 2027.

His message to other Nigerians was to cultivate a savings culture, highlighting how regular contributions could support personal financial planning and community-focused aspirations.

For digital financial service providers, such experiences point to the potential of savings products to serve purposes beyond interest earnings, including emergency preparedness, family commitments and longer-term financial goals.

Through its Wealth section, PalmPay offers customers a range of savings options with interest rates of up to 20 per cent per annum, depending on the product and applicable terms.

The offerings include Cash Box, Target Savings, SafeBox, Spend & Save and Fixed Savings, each designed to accommodate different financial needs and savings preferences.

Cash Box provides customers with a flexible savings option that earns daily interest while allowing withdrawals at any time without penalties. Users can also access their funds for transfers, bill payments and other transactions while continuing to earn interest.

Target Savings is structured around specific financial objectives, allowing customers to determine their target amount, savings period and contribution frequency. Contributions can be scheduled daily, weekly or monthly, with automation helping users maintain consistency and earn interest subject to the product’s conditions.

SafeBox encourages disciplined saving through manual or automated deposits, while offering daily interest and four free withdrawal days annually.

Spend & Save takes a different approach by automatically setting aside a predetermined amount whenever customers make transfers or payments from their PalmPay accounts, integrating savings into routine spending.

Fixed Savings, meanwhile, allows users to lock away funds for periods ranging from seven to 1,000 days, with interest rates of up to 18 per cent per annum.

The range of options reflects an increasingly differentiated digital savings market, where consumers can choose between liquidity, goal-based contributions, automated saving and longer-term deposit commitments.
