Commonwealth universities leaders’ conference postponed on security concerns

Organisers of the forthcoming Commonwealth Universities Leaders Conference, initially scheduled to take place from April 23 to 24 in Abuja, have announced that the event will be rescheduled due to security concerns.

The conference, convened by the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies, was expected to bring together university leaders, policymakers, and education stakeholders from across the Commonwealth to discuss the future of higher education, collaboration, and institutional leadership.

However, in a statement made available to stakeholders, the organisers confirmed that the latest security reports and assessments have necessitated the postponement of the gathering.

According to the organisers, consultations with key stakeholders—including security agencies, institutional partners, and invited delegates—are underway to determine a new date and venue that will ensure the safety and full participation of attendees.

“The decision reflects our commitment to providing a secure and conducive environment for meaningful engagement. The conference remains a priority and will take place once the necessary arrangements are finalised,” said Dammy Sanyaolu, head of Admin at the LOC.

The Commonwealth Universities Leaders Conference is a high-level platform for dialogue on pressing issues in tertiary education, including governance, innovation, and international cooperation. It is also expected to strengthen ties among universities across the Commonwealth network.

Participants who have confirmed attendance are advised to await further communication regarding revised plans.
Although no new date has yet been announced, organisers have assured stakeholders that updates will be provided promptly as consultations progress.

The development highlights the growing importance of security considerations in planning international academic and policy events, particularly in an era of heightened global and regional uncertainties.
