Dangote Refinery’s $4.73bn earnings boost N2.15trn IPO investment appeal

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals’ emergence as a multibillion-dollar profit generator is reshaping the investment proposition behind its ongoing initial public offering (IPO), placing the company’s earnings capacity, cash generation and expansion ambitions at the centre of investor scrutiny.

The 700,000-barrels-per-day refinery reported revenue of $22.48 billion and net profit of $4.73 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, reversing a $117.2 million loss recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

The unaudited financial results show that the refinery’s revenue increased 144 percent from $9.2 billion in the first nine months of 2025, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) climbed to $5.52 billion from $627.6 million.

More significant for investors, operating cash flow rose to $3.68 billion from $364.7 million, while the company moved from a net debt position of $1.73 billion to net cash of $650.8 million. Cash balances reached $6.69 billion at September 2026, compared with $809.5 million a year earlier.

Aliko Dangote, president and chief executive of Dangote Industries Limited, said subscriptions to the IPO had already exceeded the original fundraising target, attributing the momentum to investor interest and the opportunity to widen African participation in the business.

The offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 each, with an indicative value of N2.15 trillion. The Securities and Exchange Commission extended the subscription closing date from October 13 to October 27, 2026, to accommodate growing investor interest across Africa and facilitate wider cross-border participation.

The scale of the turnaround is reflected in the refinery’s operating margins. EBITDA margin expanded to 24.56 percent from 6.83 percent in the corresponding period of 2025, indicating a substantial improvement in operating profitability relative to revenue.

The improvement comes as the company moves beyond commissioning and production ramp-up towards full commercial operations, a transition that can materially alter capacity utilisation, operating efficiency and the absorption of fixed costs.

David Bird, managing director and chief executive officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, said the third-quarter performance demonstrated that transition.

“Our third-quarter performance demonstrates the successful transition from commissioning and ramp-up activities to sustainable commercial operations,” Bird said.

He said the results reflected the strength of the integrated business model and provided a foundation for the IPO and the company’s Vision 2030 growth strategy, adding that its expansion programme was already under way.

The third-quarter figures reinforce that assessment. Revenue increased by approximately $8.57 billion between the end of June and September, while EBITDA rose by about $2.92 billion over the same period. Net profit increased from $1.82 billion at half-year to $4.73 billion at the end of September, implying an additional $2.91 billion in the third quarter.
