Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s targeted 10 million retail investors for its ongoing initial public offering (IPO), will more than double Saudi Aramco’s 4.5 million retail subscribers record exhibited during its 2019 landmark listing.
The IPO, now extended to October 27, from initial October 13, intends to raise up to $1.6 billion (or N2.15 trillion) to help fund Dangote’s Nigerian refinery expansion.
Dangote’s refinery currently processes 700,000 barrels per day, and plans to increase this to 1.4 million bpd by 2029.
This expansion would make the Lagos-based refinery the largest single train facility in the world by capacity.
An emerging African business group, Dangote Refinery also takes its record refinery IPO to East Africa with almost 20 percent of shares on offer.
Reuters reports that Dangote Refinery chief executive officer (CEO) David Bird told investors at the Fujairah Energy Markets Forum, that the refinery is targeting 10 million retail investors for its IPO, which opened on October 14.
This target would put the refinery well above the Saudi Aramco’s 4.5 million retail subscribers recorded during its 2019 IPO.
The Saudi oil giant’s listing has since become a benchmark for large-scale retail participation, with Dangote now looking to surpass that figure.
Energy industry watchers say Dangote is clearly targeting the world’s largest refinery.
The Lagos based refinery currently processes 700,000 barrels per day, following an increase from its original 650,000-bpd capacity.
The IPO will raise $1.6 billion needed to expand the processing capacity reach 1.4 million bpd by 2029.
The expansion would transform the Lagos-based facility into the world’s largest refinery by capacity, according to the industry analysts. This puts the Nigerian project on a different scale from its current position as Africa’s largest refinery.
By far, the planned expansion is one of the reasons behind the IPO, with Dangote seeking fresh capital as it moves to build additional refining capacity and strengthen its position in global petroleum markets.
Saudi Aramco’s 2019 IPO was once the world’s largest by funds raised, generating $29.4 billion after its over-allotment option was exercised.
This record has since been surpassed by SpaceX, which raised $75 billion in its June 2026 public listing.
Energy industry watchers say, however, Aramco remains relevant to Dangote’s IPO because of its retail participation. More than 4.5 million retail investors subscribed to its 2019 offering, while Dangote is targeting 10 million.
Investment analysts say that if Dangote reaches the 10 million-investor target, its retail investor base would be more than twice the size of Aramco’s 2019 participation.
Indeed, energy industry watchers say, the combination of the IPO and refinery expansion gives Dangote two ambitious targets: to build a retail investor base larger than the one attracted by Aramco’s landmark listing, and to expand its refinery into the world’s largest single train facility by capacity.
