Dangote’s refinery, industrial investments earn African Energy award

Dangote’s refinery, industrial investments earn African Energy award

Aliko Dangote has been named the 2026 African Energy Person of the Year by the African Energy Chamber (AEC), in recognition of his investments in energy infrastructure, industrial capacity and initiatives aimed at reducing Africa’s dependence on imported products.

The award recognises individuals whose activities have contributed to energy security, economic development, infrastructure expansion, local content, free markets and broader industrial growth across the continent.

The AEC said Dangote’s investments have strengthened energy security, created jobs, reduced import dependence and supported the development of African-led solutions to the continent’s energy challenges.

Central to the recognition is the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, which has emerged as one of Africa’s largest industrial projects and a major component of Nigeria’s strategy to increase domestic refining capacity.

The refinery, which began operations with a designed capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), has increased processing capacity to about 700,000 bpd. The integrated facility produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products for domestic and international markets.

The AEC said the project has altered Nigeria’s refined-product supply structure by reducing reliance on imports while positioning the country as an increasingly significant exporter of refined petroleum products.

According to data cited by the chamber, Nigeria’s seaborne petroleum-product imports declined from nearly 400,000 bpd in 2023 to below 130,000 bpd in the second quarter of 2026. At the same time, exports of refined products to Europe reached about 130,000 bpd during the quarter.

The development has gained additional significance amid disruptions to global energy supply chains, with the refinery increasingly serving regional and international markets.

Beyond refining, Dangote’s industrial strategy has centred on moving more production and value creation into Africa through investments in manufacturing, logistics, raw-material processing, transportation and energy infrastructure.

The Dangote Group has interests spanning cement, sugar, salt, flour and fertiliser, with the conglomerate increasingly focused on developing domestic supply chains and industrial capacity across the continent.

The AEC described Dangote’s approach as one that goes beyond resource extraction and trading by investing in the physical infrastructure required to support African industrialisation.

The next phase of Dangote’s energy strategy is expected to significantly increase the scale of the refinery.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery is pursuing a $14.3 billion expansion programme that would raise processing capacity from about 700,000 bpd to 1.4 million bpd by 2029.

Basic engineering for the expansion has been completed, while most detailed engineering work is said to be substantially advanced. Equipment procurement and the award of major construction contracts are also progressing.

If completed, the expansion would place the facility among the world’s largest refining complexes and further strengthen Nigeria’s position as a refining and petrochemical hub.

The refinery is also seeking to expand its ownership base. In September 2026, Dangote Petroleum Refinery launched an initial public offering involving 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at N525 each.

The offer is targeting about N2.15 trillion, equivalent to roughly $1.6 billion, with the offer running from September 14 to October 13 and a planned listing on the Nigerian Exchange later in the year.

Dangote’s energy ambitions are also extending beyond Nigeria, with the group pursuing refining and logistics opportunities elsewhere in Africa, including plans for a major refinery in East Africa.

Dangote’s industrial expansion has been built over several decades. After studying business at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, he entered several sectors before expanding what began as a trading business into the Dangote Group, now one of Africa’s largest industrial conglomerates.

His strategy has focused on reducing the structural dependence of African economies on exporting raw materials and importing finished products by developing domestic manufacturing and processing capacity.

The refinery represents the most significant expression of that strategy in the energy sector.

The AEC’s recognition also takes into account Dangote’s philanthropic activities through the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), which supports health, education, nutrition, disaster relief and poverty-reduction programmes across Africa.

The foundation has been involved in Nigeria’s efforts to eradicate polio through partnerships with organisations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, the World Health Organization and government agencies.

Nigeria was declared free of wild polio in 2020 following years of vaccination and public-health interventions.

ADF also supports nutrition programmes, agricultural development, education, vocational training and livelihood initiatives, as well as emergency responses to flooding, food shortages, displacement and disease outbreaks.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the foundation participated in the private-sector response through the Coalition Against COVID-19, supporting medical supplies, isolation centres and food assistance.

Through partnerships with governments, international organisations, universities and community groups, the foundation has also backed programmes focused on entrepreneurship, agriculture, women’s empowerment and workforce development.

The African Energy Chamber said Dangote’s investments and philanthropic activities reflect an extensive commitment to strengthening African industrial capacity, energy security and economic opportunity.
