Ibom Air steps up capacity drive with third A220-300

Ibom Air is advancing its fleet expansion programme with the pre-delivery inspection of its third Airbus A220-300, as the Akwa Ibom-owned carrier moves to increase capacity and strengthen its position in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive aviation market.

Umo Eno, Akwa Ibom State governor, led state officials and members of the airline’s management to Airbus’ production facility in Mirabel, Canada, for the inspection, which forms part of the formal acceptance process ahead of delivery.

The aircraft is the second A220 to be received under Ibom Air’s firm order for 10 Airbus A220 aircraft placed in 2021.

Once delivery formalities are completed, the aircraft will be ferried to Nigeria and formally inducted into the airline’s fleet in Akwa Ibom State before entering commercial service.

George Uriesi, chief executive officer of Ibom Air, said the new aircraft would support the carrier’s focus on operational efficiency, reliability, safety and passenger experience.

He described the pre-delivery inspection as an important milestone in the airline’s fleet expansion programme, adding that the A220 remained central to its network strategy.

The fleet investment comes as Nigerian airlines face the challenge of expanding capacity while managing high operating costs and an ageing fleet across parts of the industry.

For Ibom Air, the A220-300 provides a platform for increasing available seats while maintaining the operating characteristics required for domestic and regional routes.

Airbus describes the A220 as offering fuel efficiency, operational flexibility and passenger comfort, features that could support the airline’s efforts to grow while controlling operating costs.

Guillaume Chevasson, head of the A220 programme and chief executive officer of Airbus Canada, said the aircraft was suited to Ibom Air’s domestic and regional network.

He said Airbus would continue supporting the airline as it expands its fleet and operations.

Ibom Air’s order for 10 A220 aircraft, placed in 2021, represents one of the most significant fleet-modernisation commitments by a Nigerian airline and provides the carrier with a defined path for scaling its operations.

The latest aircraft therefore goes beyond a single fleet addition; it forms part of a longer-term capacity strategy.

For the Akwa Ibom government, the airline is also being positioned as an economic asset capable of supporting the state’s broader development strategy.

Governor Eno said the fleet investment aligned with the state’s ARISE Agenda and its ambition to develop Akwa Ibom into an aviation hub supported by modern infrastructure and a competitive airline.

He linked the additional aircraft to potential gains in trade, tourism, investment and regional development.

The aircraft acquisition also strengthens the relationship between Ibom Air and Airbus.

The manufacturer said the A220’s combination of fuel efficiency, operational flexibility, performance and cabin comfort made it suitable for the airline’s network.

For Ibom Air, standardising a significant portion of its fleet around a modern aircraft family could offer operational benefits through fleet commonality, while providing a consistent passenger experience.

The airline will now complete the remaining delivery procedures before the aircraft is flown to Nigeria.

Its entry into commercial service will increase Ibom Air’s fleet capacity and provide another asset with which the carrier can pursue its domestic and regional expansion strategy.
