Nigeria launches national digital postcode system

Nigeria launches national digital postcode system

The federal government has launched Nigeria’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, moving the country closer to a standardised digital addressing infrastructure that assigns unique location identities to addressable buildings and other locations nationwide.

The system, launched through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to assign an 11-character alphanumeric postcode to homes, businesses, farms, schools, offices and other addressable locations.

The launch marks the implementation of a system the Federal Government had announced earlier this year as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital addressing infrastructure and improve how people, businesses and public institutions locate and reach one another.

Business A.M reported in June that the government planned to launch the digital postcode system, with applications expected to span security, service delivery and other areas of the digital economy.

Speaking at the launch, Bosun Tijani, minister of communications, innovation and digital economy, said the system would provide a location layer that could support access to services and economic opportunities.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.

According to the minister, accurate location data could help address longstanding challenges in identifying and reaching people, businesses and communities, with potential applications across e-commerce, last-mile delivery, emergency response and the delivery of public services.

The system is also designed to provide a machine-readable location reference that can be integrated into digital platforms and services.

Tola Odeyemi, postmaster general and chief executive officer of NIPOST, said the system would change how locations are identified and accessed across the country.

“Everyone in Nigeria has a location. Now every location has a postcode,” Odeyemi said.

She said the system would address problems associated with Nigeria’s reliance on informal directions, which can make it difficult for businesses, emergency responders and other service providers to locate specific addresses.

According to NIPOST, the postcodes are mapped and managed through its GIS infrastructure and are intended to give homes, shops, farms, schools and offices a precise digital location reference.

Beyond postal services, the system is expected to support logistics, e-commerce, emergency response, financial services, infrastructure planning and public administration.

For businesses, a standardised digital location could make it easier to identify customers and delivery points, particularly for e-commerce and last-mile delivery services.

The government also expects the system to support emergency response by making it easier for responders to identify and reach specific locations, while financial institutions and other digital service providers could use location data as part of services that require reliable address information.

The Federal Government is encouraging individuals, businesses and organisations to find and begin using their postcodes in everyday transactions and operations.

Nigerians can retrieve their postcode through the dedicated digital postcode platform and are encouraged to share it with family members, customers, businesses and others who may need to locate them.

The launch gives practical effect to the government’s earlier plans to modernise Nigeria’s addressing system, shifting the focus from simply identifying postal zones to creating a digital location layer that can be used across multiple sectors of the economy.
