Emirates is raising the stakes in the increasingly competitive premium-travel market with the launch of a new electrically powered Premium Economy seat, giving passengers greater privacy and control while extending the product to key African routes.
The airline says the new seat is the world’s first electrically powered Premium Economy seat with a full-height adjustable privacy screen, marking the latest investment in its expanding Airbus A350 fleet and its strategy of offering a differentiated product between Economy and Business Class.
For African travellers, Emirates’ latest cabin investment is also a connectivity play. The airline’s A350 Premium Economy is now available on daily Dubai services to Entebbe, Tunis and Cape Town, bringing its newest premium cabin offering closer to key African markets.
The wider network gives passengers travelling from other African destinations the opportunity to connect through Dubai to A350-operated flights across Asia, Europe and Australia.
Chasing the premium passenger
Emirates’ A350 Premium Economy cabin contains just 28 seats in a 2-3-2 configuration, creating a more spacious proposition than conventional Economy cabins.
The seats are 20 inches wide, with pitch of up to 39 inches, and recline into a cradle position designed to provide greater comfort without intruding on passengers behind.
The electrically operated privacy divider is the product’s most distinctive feature. Passengers can raise or lower the full-height screen through the seat controls and lock it into position, creating a more private space for working, dining or sleeping.
The seat is also Emirates’ first fully electrically powered Premium Economy seat, with passengers able to adjust their preferred position through an integrated control unit. Dedicated lounge and meal modes are included.
Emirates has built the new product around a wider premium-service proposition.
The cabin features Safran Seats’ U-Dream leather headrest, with adjustable wings for additional neck and head support, together with a manually deployable leather footrest.
Wireless charging is being introduced to Premium Economy for the first time, while every seat includes USB-C charging and a tray table with an integrated phone holder.
Passengers will also have access to the airline’s ice entertainment system through a 13.3-inch 4K HDR touchscreen.
Food and beverage are another major part of the proposition. Emirates Premium Economy passengers receive regionally inspired meals served on Royal Doulton fine china, accompanied by linen napkins, stainless-steel cutlery and a premium drinks selection.
The airline says it has invested more than $1 billion in its wine portfolio since 2006, highlighting the scale of its effort to differentiate the premium experience beyond seating.
Emirates’ latest Premium Economy investment is part of a wider strategy to strengthen its competitive position in premium international travel, with Africa forming an important component of its global connectivity model.
Dubai remains central to that strategy, serving as a connecting point between African markets and destinations across Asia, Europe and Australia. The expansion of A350 Premium Economy consequently allows Emirates to extend its latest-generation cabin experience to passengers travelling from across its African network.
The airline’s strategy is supported by a product that has already established a strong market position. Since its launch in 2022, Premium Economy has expanded alongside Emirates’ A350 fleet and received multiple industry awards, including Best Premium Economy Class at the Business Traveller Middle East Awards in 2024 and 2025.
The introduction of a fully electric seat with enhanced privacy represents the next stage of that differentiation.
Rather than competing solely on network and frequency, Emirates is increasingly competing on the quality of the journey itself. The objective is to encourage passengers to upgrade from Economy by offering tangible improvements in privacy, comfort and personal space.
