Zenith Bank’s N410.7bn dividend powers Africa’s best bank crown at Euromoney Awards

Zenith Bank’s N410.7bn dividend powers Africa’s best bank crown at Euromoney Awards

Zenith Bank Plc’s record N410.69 billion dividend payout and improved asset quality have emerged as key indicators of the financial strength behind its latest rise to the top of African banking, with the lender now combining profitability at home with a bigger push for continental relevance.

The bank was recently named Africa’s Best Bank and Nigeria’s Best Bank at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026 in London, with the national award coming for the second consecutive year.

The recognition comes after Zenith grew gross earnings by six percent to N4.19 trillion in the 2025 financial year and delivered N1.04 trillion in profit after tax.

More significantly for investors and the banking market, the lender cut its non-performing loan ratio from 4.7 percent to 3.8 percent while doubling its dividend per share to N10, translating to a total payout of N410.69 billion. The dividend was twice the N5 per share paid in 2024.

That combination of earnings generation, credit-risk improvement and shareholder returns provides the financial foundation for Zenith’s continued investment in artificial intelligence, digital banking and pan-African transaction banking.

The Euromoney award, one of the most closely watched recognitions in global banking, followed a competition that attracted more than 770 entries from financial institutions around the world, including HSBC, Morgan Stanley, Citibank, Barclays, Standard Bank and DBS Bank of Singapore.

The awards considered strategy, profitability, risk management, digital transformation and stakeholder impact.

For Zenith, the recognition marks the latest validation of a strategy that increasingly extends beyond its traditional position as one of Nigeria’s largest and most profitable banks.

The lender has been expanding its trade and transaction banking capabilities to connect businesses across key African markets, while investing in technology and artificial intelligence to strengthen its digital operations.

Adaora Umeoji, group managing director and chief executive officer of Zenith Bank, said the recognition reflected customer trust and the commitment of the bank’s workforce.

“Being recognised as Africa’s Best Bank and Nigeria’s Best Bank reflects the trust of our customers, the dedication of our unicorn workforce, and our unwavering commitment to building a truly African global financial institution,” she said.

She said the awards would encourage Zenith to do more in financial inclusion and in supporting businesses across Africa.

Umeoji also commended regulators in the various jurisdictions where Zenith operates for providing an enabling environment and dedicated the awards to the bank’s founder, Jim Ovia, CFR.

The Euromoney awards extend a long sequence of domestic and international recognition for Zenith.

The bank was ranked Nigeria’s number one bank by Tier-1 capital for the 17th consecutive year in The Banker’s 2026 Top 1000 World Banks Ranking.

It has also received repeated recognition from Global Finance, World Finance, International Banker and The Banker for its performance across commercial banking, digital banking, corporate governance, sustainability and brand strength.

Zenith was named Best Commercial Bank in Nigeria for six consecutive years from 2021 to 2026 in the World Finance Banking Awards.

It has also been recognised repeatedly for corporate governance and sustainability, while its digital banking capabilities have earned international recognition.

The breadth of the awards reflects the changing basis of competition in African banking.

Banks are no longer competing only on balance-sheet size or branch networks. They are increasingly being judged by their ability to combine profitability with technology, risk management, governance and the capacity to support businesses operating across borders.

The latest recognition, however, also raises the bar for Zenith. The bank must now sustain earnings growth and asset-quality improvements while continuing to fund technology investments, increase digital adoption and expand its African footprint.

With N4.19 trillion in gross earnings, N1.04 trillion in profit after tax and a record N410.69 billion dividend payout behind its latest international recognition, Zenith is presenting a model of Nigerian banking built on a combination of financial scale, shareholder returns and regional ambition.

Its next challenge will be proving that the model can travel successfully beyond Nigeria.

Onafriq, a pan-African payments company, is set to discontinue its Baxi agent banking business in Nigeria after five years, citing naira depreciation, rising operating costs and intensifying competition that have weakened the segment’s profitability. The planned shutdown will affect the agent banking operations conducted through Baxi under Onafriq Nigeria Payments Limited. However, the decision does not signal the company’s withdrawal from Nigeria, as it intends to retain its cross-border payments network and card issuing services in the country. In a statement, Onafriq said changes in Nigeria’s operating environment since 2024 had significantly altered the economics of its offline agent banking business, making the existing model unsustainable. The move marks a strategic shift for the company, which entered Nigeria’s agent banking market to expand access to financial services through a network of agents providing transaction services outside traditional bank branches. Onafriq attributed the decision to a combination of macroeconomic pressures and structural changes in the country’s payments industry. According to the company, naira depreciation and inflation have affected transaction volumes, increased operating expenses and undermined the sustainability of its agent banking operations. The growing adoption of instant account-to-account transfers has also changed the mix of transactions handled by agents, while heightened competition among payment service providers has put further pressure on margins. These developments have made it increasingly difficult for the business to remain viable under its existing operating structure, prompting the company to reassess its long-term strategy. Dare Okoudjou, founder and chief executive officer of Onafriq, said the decision to close the business was difficult, particularly given the efforts of employees, agents and business partners who helped build the Baxi network. “We entered Nigeria with conviction and commitment, but did not achieve the outcome we set out for. Closing this business was a difficult decision to arrive at, one that affects colleagues, agents, and business partners across Nigeria who poured their hearts and soul into building out the Baxi network,” Okoudjou said. Despite the closure, he reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the Nigerian market, noting that the group would continue to serve customers through its payments network and card issuing operations. Onafriq entered Nigeria’s agent banking market in 2021 through the acquisition of Baxi, also known as Capricorn Digital Limited. The company said it continued investing in the business through 2023, with efforts focused on expanding and strengthening its agent network. However, a subsequent review of the business’s long-term prospects and financial sustainability led to the decision to wind down the operation. As part of the transition, Onafriq said agents onboarded through the Baxi platform had been moved to another principal bank, a step intended to facilitate continuity for the affected agents. The company has also directed agents to transfer their funds to their preferred principal bank within 30 days, adding that its teams would provide support throughout the transition process. Employees whose roles are linked to the agent banking business will also be consulted and supported during the wind-down, with Onafriq pledging to treat affected workers fairly.
